Start Planting The Seeds Of Peace In Our Next Generation - Part 2

“If we are to teach real peace in the world, we shall have to begin with the children” ~Mahatma Gandhi

In order to be the positive change we would like to see in the world, whether we are teachers or family members, it starts with us to plant the seeds of peace in our next generation of children. Being mindful of how we act and react to the negativity of the world is key as the children within and around us are very observant of how we act. This is where children begin picking up traits of those around them.

As we work on ourselves to be kind, gentle and loving to carry forth the positive vibrations to others in our lives, we exponentiate positive change for peace in the word. It starts with us.

Children are like sponges where they absorb and learn many new things for their greater good to molding them into adults but this, unfortunately, includes negativity. We as adults should be mindful of being positive even in negative situations. Our positive reactions will be seen by our children so it is a good idea to lead by example

In order for our next generation to be kind, loving positive individuals, it is our responsibility to teach and lead by example. Always practice what you teach. If we all could do this, what a wonderful world this would be. Imagine what great leaders our next generation could become. Imagine what the world could be like as our next generation leads their children by positive example. That brings peace in of itself.

Here are a few tips for teaching and creating peace…

1. Be a role model…

This is a very important step as children are watching and learning everything you say and do. We have to be cognizant of how we react to things, for example, don’t go on a rant about the grouchy neighbor. Abstain arguing with your spouse or anyone else in front of the children for that matter. Instead, show kindness, tolerance, and forgiveness when talking to or about other people. A good adage to keep in mind is to talk, think and be kind.

2. Explain the definition of peace…

Explain to the children what peace means to you and ask for their thoughts. Everyone’s idea of peace may vary. For some, it could simply mean a quiet moment or as grand as a negative free world. Talk to your children about this and share ideas. Really listen to your children’s opinion. You may be surprised what they can teach us.

3. Teach resolution skills…

One effective method is to pick an object, for example, it can be a Teddy Bear that can be used in times of conflict. The children that are involved in the conflict sit in a circle facing each other. The child holding the Teddy Bear gets to speak first. Everyone listens with respect and without interruption to what the child has to say. Then the Teddy Bear gets passed to the next child and they get their time to speak. By doing this it creates an environment where everyone gets heard where it promotes and improves listening skills. This gives the others a chance to see things from that person’s perspective. It is really all about perspective. Listen before we speak.

4. Encourage children to respect and take care of their environment…

This teaches love and respect for others, whether it be human beings, other living creatures, plant life, etc. Activities such as helping their parents, feeding pets, planting and watering a garden. This promotes children to engage with the environment and to teach love and respect for others.

5. Advocate children to read…

Not only is reading in of itself is a very peaceful act, certain books can do a great job in teaching the concept of peace. Of course, this probably goes without saying but we need to be mindful of what books children are reading. Be sure that those books are advocating peace. This is a great task to encourage at bedtime for children. This will promote great sleeping patterns when they read happy stories. Reading together is another great way to encourage your child’s love of learning as well as creating snuggle opportunities.

These are just a few tips to help us help our children in the next generation to become fun-loving and respectful adults. To carry forth peace and tolerance as they become our new leaders of the world.

A world that could become a peaceful loving world.

Imagine that for a moment…

It’s never too late to start planting the seeds of peace in children of this generation.

Be the peace you seek!
